Funding:
Insurance billing is our primary source of funding and allows us to maintain modern equipment and purchase supplies and training materials. We must purchase fuel for ambulances, we pay vehicle insurance on the ambulances, as well as pay for utilities for our station. These costs alone are very expensive. In order to maintain modern, state of the art ambulances we strive to maintain sufficient funding to purchase a new ambulance every five years. A typical ambulance which meets the needs of our service area costs approximately $100,000.
A common misconception in the community is residents who pay the fire service fee each year do not have to pay for ambulance service; this is false. Due to the way the fire service fee ordinance is written it can not cover emergency ambulance services. Further, it is illegal for an ambulance service to bill some patients for services and not bill others simply because they make a donation or pay a service fee. Therefore, if we allowed the fire fee to cover ambulance transportation, we could not bill anyone who was not a resident of Marlinton for the ambulance services they are rendered. The Fire Service Fee is the only funding given to the Marlinton Volunteer Fire Department and is used strictly for fire department vehicles and equipment.
Billing Information:
Billing for our squad is handled by Medical Claims Assistance, Inc. (MCA) of Huntington, WV. The increasing demands of billing for over 600 calls per year and requirements for electronic claims submission, etc. required that we seek an agency who specializes in ambulance billing services. Since switching to MCA our claims have been filed more timely and with a much better return rate. MCA staff can be reached at 1-800-676-4785 if you have questions concerning your billing. Please DO NOT contact the Marlinton Rescue Squad or the Town of Marlinton regarding ambulance bills. We do not have any information on the bill and can not make any changes.
